Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s Highlights of the IPL 2022 match between Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings from the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
PUNJAB KINGS BEAT CHENNAI SUPER KINGS BY 54 RUNS
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: LIAM LIVINGSTONE – 60 (32) & 2/25
Punjab Kings cruised to a facile win over defending champion Chennai Super Kings on Sunday and rose to the fourth spot on the IPL 2022 points table. Put in to bat by Ravindra Jadeja, Punjab was off to a shaky start after losing two wickets for 14 runs. Shikhar Dhawan (33 off 24) and Liam Livingstone (60 off 32) then stitched a 95-run stand for the third wicket to put the Kings in a strong position. However, a flurry of wickets and some disciplined death bowling by Chris Jordan (two for 23) and Dwaine Pretorius (two for 30) restricted Punjab to 180 for eight in 20 overs. Chennai’s chase never took off as the Men in Yellow lost their first five wickets for 36 runs with debutant pacer Vaibhav Arora (two for 21) removing Robin Uthappa and Moeen Ali inside the PowerPlay. Shivam Dube’s 30-ball 57 was the only silver lining of an otherwise harrowing display with the bat by the Super Kings. MS Dhoni scored a sluggish 28-ball 23 and was eventually strangled down leg by Rahul Chahar who picked three for 25 from his four overs.

Chennai Super Kings will know all about it after it failed to defend 210 against Lucknow Super Giants in the last fixture at this venue.

The importance of the toss at IPL 2022
As we near the all-important toss at the Brabourne Stadium, let’s have a look at the toss history for both teams in IPL 2021. Chennai never lost a game after winning the toss last year and managed to win half of its matches even after losing it.
Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings have lost both their tosses this season so far in a tournament that has seen dew disproportionately favour the team batting second. Only three matches have been won by the team batting first in the first ten games.

CSK VS PBKS (LAST FIVE MEETINGS)
Punjab Kings won by six wickets (October 7, 2021)
Chennai Super Kings won six wickets (April 16, 2021)
Chennai Super Kings won by nine wickets (November 1, 2020)
Chennai Super Kings 10 wickets (October 4, 2020)
Punjab Kings won by six wickets (May, 2019)
Chennai Super Kings finds itself in an unfamiliar space – staring at a possibility of a third straight defeat. Loss of the toss preceded the loss of two matches by six wickets. On Sunday, it faces a less-wounded Punjab Kings, which is nursing an equally painful six-wicket drubbing from Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday night.
Needless to stress the importance of toss in the eventual outcome, both teams would like to chase a target. As seen in the two matches so far, the surface at the Brabourne Stadium has encouraged big-hitting, but the onset of dew has decisively helped those batting second.
CSK’s new skipper Ravindra Jadeja is yet to display his leadership or captaincy credentials. Not surprisingly, M. S. Dhoni is seen marshalling the resources in pressure situations.
However, that has not helped CSK’s fortunes. So far, the team’s new-ball bowling options look most ordinary and overall, the inexperience as a bowling unit hurt the team.
Unlike Chennai, Punjab is unsure about both batting and bowling. After suffering at the hands of Umesh Yadav and Andre Russell by turns, a night before, the Mayank Agarwal-led team will have to sort out too many things in quick time to deal with a determined rival.
