PRAYAGRAJ: A 28-year-old man who took Viagra pills up to six to eight times the prescribed dose within three months of getting married had to undergo two surgeries to ease a persistent and painful erection. The surgeries were performed by doctors at the urology department of MLN Medical College, Prayagraj.
Doctors said the man started taking Viagra on the suggestion of his friends and gradually increased his dose to six to eight times the prescribed limit. “He developed a condition called priapism, which is an unwanted, persistent erection with progressively worsening pain. It may occur spontaneously or from certain antidepressants or erectile dysfunction drugs,” said Dr Dilip Chaurasia of MLN Medical College, Prayagraj. The symptoms include an erection lasting more than four hours or off and on for several hours.
When the man’s wife saw him in pain, she approached the doctors. A team of doctors led by Dr Chaurasia examined the patient and decided to remove the erection. The first surgerylasted over an hour.
After performing the first surgery, he was called after a gap of two months for penile prosthesis surgery, which was done last Saturday, the doctor sa id. “Penile prosthesis surgery is a treatment option for men with erectile dysfunction. In this surgery, devices known as penile implants are placed in the male genital to help men with erectile dysfunction achieve an erection,” he added.
This was the first time that such a surgery has been performed in Prayagraj, Dr Chaurasia said. “After the surgery, the man will lea d a happy married life again and can also become a father,” he added.
