There were widespread protests across the country against Nupur Sharma’s controversial comments made during a TV debate

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday came down heavily on former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, after she filed a petition to transfer all cases against her in various states to Delhi.
Sharma was in the news recently for her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammad, made during a TV debate, that sparked protests across the country. Several Muslim countries too called out Sharma for her comments, leaving the Modi government to do some diplomatic damage control exercise.
The court did not even spare the Delhi Police for the manner in which the investigations have progressed so far.
Here’s what the Supreme Court said in its terse observations while dismissing Sharma’s plea.
Irresponsible statements set entire country on fire
She actually has a loose tongue and has made all kinds of irresponsible statements on TV and set the entire country on fire. Yet, she claims to be a lawyer of 10 years standing. What is her business to make such remarks? These people are not religious. They do not have respect for other religions.
Single-handedly responsible for what’s happening
She ignited emotions across the country has led to unfortunate incidents. She has a threat or she has become a security threat? The way she has ignited emotions across the country. This lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country. These remarks were made for cheap publicity or for political agenda or some other nefarious activities.
Apology came too late
Her apology came too late and that too conditionally saying if religious sentiments are hurt and so on. She should have been on TV immediately and apologised to the nation. If there was a misuse of the debate, the first thing she should have done was to file an FIR against the anchor. The case of a journalist expressing his right on a particular issue is on a different pedestal from a spokesperson of a political party who is lambasting others with irresponsible statements without thinking of the consequences.
Power gone to her head
Because she is spokesperson of a party, power has gone to her head. Her petition smacks of arrogance and that she thinks that the magistrate of the country is too small for her.
Delhi Police chastised
What has happened in the investigation so far? What has Delhi Police done so far? Don’t make us open our mouth? They must have put red carpet for you. On her complaint, a person is arrested but despite multiple FIRs, she has not yet been touched by Delhi police.
