NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Shimla on Tuesday to participate in the ‘Garib Kalyan Sammelan’ being organised in state capitals, district headquarters and Krishi Vigyan Kendras across the country to commemorate the completion of eight years of the BJP government at the centre.
The Prime Minister, accompanied by Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jai Ram Thakur, governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Union minister Anurag Thakur, also released the 11th installment of Kisan Samman Nidhi of Rs 21000 crore to 80 crore farmers.

Jai Ram Thakur welcomed PM Modi with traditional Himachali cap, shawl and a painting. The PM then interacted with the beneficiaries of 16 government welfare schemes before addressing the public from the Ridge.
Addressing the rally, PM Modi, who last visited Himachal Pradesh on December 27 to address a rally at the Paddal ground in the CM’s home district Mandi to mark the fourth anniversary of the BJP government in the state, said that the challenges in India have shifted from corruption and loot of schemes.

Before and after 2014
Drawing comparisons between the governance before they came to power in 2014 and after it, PM Modi spoke on a variety of subjects like corruption, defence, health, women empowerment and various government schemes. He started by saying that India’s borders have become more secure than they were before they came to power eight years back.

“The government before 2014 had considered corruption as an essential part of the system, the then government had succumbed to it instead of fighting corruption, then the country was seeing that the money of the schemes is looted even before it reaches the needy,” PM Modi said.
“But today, the discussion is about the benefits of Jan Dhan accounts, jan dhan-aadhaar and trishakti made of mobile. Earlier there was a compulsion to bear the smoke in the kitchen, today it is convenient to get cylinders from Ujjwala scheme.”
Modi said that while people were finding it difficult to pay for their treatments earlier, the same are enjoying the benefits of Ayushman Bharat. He also said that women now have the courage to fight for their rights with no fear of triple talaq.

“Our schemes for service, good governance and welfare of the poor have changed the meaning of government for the people,” he said. “Be it PM awas yojana, scholarships or pension schemes, with the help of technology, we have reduced the scope of corruption to a minimum. We are trying to give permanent solutions to the problems that were previously considered permanent.”
Modi also lauded their ‘one rank one pension’ scheme and said, “It is our own government that implemented one rank one pension after four decades of waiting, gave arrears money to our ex-servicemen. It has greatly benefited every family in Himachal.”

Votebank politics
“There has been votebank politics in our country for decades. The politics of building their own votebank has done a lot of harm to the country. We are not working to build a votebank, we are working to create a new India,” he said.
Future plans
With plans like building a medical college in every district of the country, PM Modi also spoke of his vision for the country. “We have to work for the ascendant India of the 21st century, for the bright future of generations to come. An India that has no identity but modernity,” he said.
“No goal is impossible ahead of the strength of us Indians. Today, India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Today, record foreign investment is taking place in India.”
The Assembly election in Himachal Pradesh is scheduled to be held later this year.
