crpf: School and hospital among 737 premises used by CRPF for its camps | India News

NEW DELHI: CRPF has set up its camps and offices at 737 premises in Jammu and Kashmir, which include 333 government offices, 265 private buildings including those of Kashmiri pandits, 71 pieces of agricultural land, 26 factories, 30 hotels, 8 orchards, 2 cinema halls, and even a school and hospital, sources said on Thursday.
However, the force has long vacated temporary accommodation such as marriage halls assigned to it in October last year to house the additional troops they had rushed Srinagar in the wake of targeted killing of minorities.
Jammu and Kashmir government has transferred 524 kanals of land to CRPF for setting up camps at 10 locations across the UT, CRPF DG Kuldiep Singh said while addressing a press conference here ahead of CRPF’s Raising Day.
The J&K administration pays rent to owners in case of private properties assigned to CRPF, another senior CRPF officer said.
Singh said CRPF being at these locations serves the twin purpose of serving as accommodation for its personnel while also ensuring that these buildings remain secure. Asked specifically about whether the CRPF will move out in case the Kashmiri Pandits want to reclaim and reoccupy their properties, he replied in the affirmative and said they would seek another place instead of from the J&K government.
CRPF personnel killed 175 terrorists and apprehended 183 in J&K between March 1 2021 and March 16, 2022. Asked if the situation in J&K was conducive for the return and resettlement of Kashmir Pandits in the Valley, the DG said that while it was safe for anyone to visit Kashmir the call on return and resettlement of Kashmiri Pandits has to be taken either by the Kashmir Pandits or the “agencies”.
Singh said CRPF is looking to upgrade its surveillance systems and is in talks with a US manufacturer to procure a multi-mode passive detection system that will do a full-body scan of vehicles, including trucks, for concealed contraband goods, humans hiding in false cavities in these vehicles, firearms, ammunition, explosives, IED components, gun silences, night vision devices, radio equipment, narcotics, and fake currency. A CRPF team may soon travel to the US to examine the system, which is sought to be deployed in J&K.
Meanwhile, in Left-wing extremism-hit areas, CRPF killed 19 Maoists but lost 10 personnel in the last one year. It also lost 10 personnel to suicides.
Asked if the about 3.25 lakh personnel strong force will hold an exclusive screening of “The Kashmir Files” movie for its staff, Singh said that while any film or drama that has motivational or inspirational content should be watched, “We are a big force that is spread across…we will have to make arrangements. We will think about it”
The CRPF is celebrating its Raising Day for the first time outside Delhi; it will hold the 83rd Raising Day event on March 19 at Jammu, with home minister Amit Shah joining in as the chief guest.
The minister will subsequently chair a multi-agency security meeting on various operations being conducted by them in the Union territory.
