An Apple iPhone can save your life in a car crash! Yes, as per a report by The Wall Street Journal, Apple now wants your iPhone to detect car crashes and give a call to 911 automatically. The company is reportedly working on a product feature named “crash detection” for both iPhones and Apple Watches (presumably as part of iOS 16 and WatchOS 9). It can be known that Google’s Personal safety app on Pixel phones already includes a feature to call for help when it detects car crashes.

Getting crash detection on an iPhone can save the lives of lots of people as more drivers can get the help they need in an accident as long as they have the phone in their pocket or in the car. According to the report, crash detection technology assesses data gathered through sensors that are built into Apple devices. The sensor system of the devices will include an accelerometer which will detect car accidents as they occur via a spike in gravity, or ‘g-force’.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple tested the crash-detection feature throughout 2021 by collecting anonymous data from iPhone and Apple Watch users. Research has shown that the iPhone and Apple Watches were able to detect more than 10 million suspected vehicle impacts, of which more than 50,000 included a call to 911.

While, as per a report by ANI, according to Apple the rise of unsafe smartphone usage in cars made way for integration systems like CarPlay and Android Auto and nearly 80 percent of new vehicles in 2020 had the former.

If the crash detection feature rolls out it will add more safety functions to the Apple devices. Apple in 2018 released a fall-detection feature for its Watch that works on the same line. While earlier a tool that analyzes the walking steadiness of users was added to iOS.

It can be known that there are several third-party applications available on the App Store that offer automatic car crash detection.
