nsil: NSIL’s dedicated satellite mission for TataSky on June 22; Will be launched on Ariane-5 | India News

BENGALURU: Space PSU NewSpace India Limited’s (NSIL) first dedicated commercial satellite launch mission that will see a communication satellite launched for TataSky’s direct-to-home (DTH) services is scheduled for June 22.
NSIL will be launching the GSAT-24 using the services of French firm Arianespace, which will employ its heavy-lift rocket Ariane-5. While sources in NSIL said the satellite was in advanced stages of testing, Arianespace has confirmed that this Ariane-5 launch from the Guiana Space Centre, Europe’s Spaceport, “is scheduled for June 22”.
Stating that the Ariane-5 would launch satellites for two of its major customers — MEASAT, the Malaysian satellite operator, and the GSAT-24 for India’s NSIL — Arianespace said the Ariane-5 heavy-lift launcher is an European Space Agency (ESA) programme carried out in co-operation between public institutions and industry.
The GSAT-24 is a Ku-band 4-tonne class communications satellite built by Isro for NSIL that will provide high-quality television, telecommunications and broadcasting services over India. The satellite, as first reported by TOI will be dedicated for TataSky and is the first demand driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL.
For MEASAT, Arianespace will be launching MEASAT-3d satellite, which is a multi-mission telecommunications satellite built by Airbus Defence and Space. “This new satellite will significantly enhance broadband speeds of up to 100 Mbps per user in areas with limited or no terrestrial network throughout Malaysia while continuing to provide redundancy and additional capacity for video distribution in HD, 4K, and ultimately 8K in the Asia-Pacific region,” Arianespace said.
As part of space reforms announced by the Centre, NSIL has been mandated to undertake operational satellite missions on a ‘demand driven’ model, wherein the Space PSU has the responsibility to build, launch, own & operate the satellite and provide services to its committed customer.
NSIL CMD Radhakrishnan D had told TOI earlier: “…All these years, firms would seek satellite capacity after satellites were launched. This is the first time that a customer has made a demand and we are launching a dedicated satellite to meet that demand. This is one of the mandates as part of the space reforms. Agreements have been signed with TataSky and Arianespace and we are looking at a February 2022 launch.”
GSAT-24 will be fully funded, owned and operated by NSIL on a commercial basis. The satellite, which will carry 24 Ku-band transponders.
Earlier, firms would get annual leases to utilise satellite capacity. In this case, TataSky would have the transponders for a much longer time.
