MI 53/0 in 5 overs: Rashid Khan into the attack. Rohit starts off with a single. Kishan flicks this to deep mid-wicket for one. Length ball outside off and Rohit slog-sweeps this and gets it just over square leg for three runs. Kishan misses the pull next ball and it hits him on the thigh pad. Beaten comprehensively as Rashid turns it into Kishan, and it runs away off the inside edge, just missing the stumps. Loose final ball of the delivery. FOUR! Full on the pads but Kishan has trouble sweeping this to the boundary as well and tumbles after doing so.

MI 40/0 in 4 overs: FOUR! Supreme timing from Rohit. Length ball outside off, Rohit hangs back and guides this behind point with serene timing. FOUR! Another length ball in the channel and cut off the backfoot and bisects cover and point. Beaten! Another good length delivery outside off but this beats Rohit, who tries to guide it to third with an open face. Single at point next ball. Kishan gets a thick outside edge on the drive outside off and collects a couple behind point. Kishan thumps this length ball outside off straight to mid-off.

MI 29/0 in 3 overs: Kishan tucks this off his pads for a single. It was angling into his pads on a length. SIX! Length ball outside off and Rohit shuffles a bit across his stumps, kneels and laps this over fine-leg. Full on middle and driven to mid-on for a single. Kishan returns strike with a single to third-man. One more to end the over. Ten runs from this Shami over.

MI 19/0 in 2 overs: FOUR! Full outside off from Joseph first ball and Rohit unleashes a lofted cover-drive and finds the boundary. FOUR! Short of a length and Kishan hops and pulls behind square for a single. Two slips in place for Rohit. The first one he faces takes a thick outside edge and goes behind point for a single. One more for Kishan in front of point. Shami darts this straight, on a length and Rohit defends it back. Fuller on off stump with a hint of in-swing and solidly defended by Rohit again. Sliding on the pads and tucked away by Rohit to fine-leg for one more.

MATCH PREVIEW

In this game of glorious uncertainties, one of the few certainties of the season has been the underwhelming show by Mumbai Indians.

The win against Rajasthan Royals at Navi Mumbai ended what had seemed a never-ending run of losses but may have come too late. It would have helped Rohit Sharma’s men regain some of their self-belief. They will need plenty of that when they take on Gujarat Titans at the Brabourne Stadium here on Friday in the clash between the IPL’s table-topper and the basement-dweller.

Titans, a side that has thus far lived up to its name, is closer to the playoffs than anybody else, having lost just two of its 10 games.

Ironically, it is a former MI star that played the key role in its superb campaign. Hardik Pandya, who had been with the five-time champion since 2015 before being released ahead of the mega auction, has led from the front.

He is the team’s leading run-scorer with 309 runs. Shubman Gill and David Miller, too, are in good nick. If the top-order doesn’t click, there is Rahul Tewatia to whack those sixes.

GT has also been served well by its strong bowling attack featuring Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson and Rashid Khan.

As for MI, it will be hoping that Rohit is among runs again. His return to form would ease the pressure on Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma. The team also needs the bowlers to continue from where they left off at Navi Mumbai.
