Hello and welcome to Sportstar’s live coverage of the IPL 2022 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings.
SRH have entered the top four in the points table courtesy this win. Punjab Kings now seventh. An all-round performance from SRH. Their bowlers, spearheaded by Bhuvi and Umran, restricted Punjab to 151 despite Livingstone’s fireworks. In the run chase, Markram and Pooran showed composure and game awareness to deny Punjab a win. That would be all from our side. Thanks for joining us.
Arora to bowl the 19th. How many can these two get in this over? 3 off the first three balls before Markram crunches the fourth ball over extra cover for four. He finishes off in style with a six, like he did in the previous game! Terrific from SRH. They win by seven wickets, SRH’s fourth consecutive win.
SRH 139/3 in 18 overs: Arshdeep for the 18th. Pooran doing it in style as squeezes out a wide yorker for four. 8 off the over.
SRH 131/3 in 17 overs: Rabada is bowling the 17th. Two for Pooran off the first ball. Excellent running between the wickets by these two. A single and a brace later, Markram collects four off the fourth ball. 1 run off the penultimate ball. 10 off the over. Need 21 from 18 balls.
SRH 121/3 in 16 overs: Arshdeep Singh back for his third. Six off the first five including a wide. Markram makes it 10 with a four off the last ball.
SRH 111/3 in 15 overs: Chahar to bowl out. Five runs from it in the end. Chahar: 4-0-28-2.
SRH 106/3 in 14 overs: Rabada is back into the attack. Nearly suicidal from Markram. Easy run out chance at the non-striker’s end but Rabada goes for the direct hit and misses. Miscommunication between Pooran and Markram, the Protean had nearly reached the striker’s end before turning back. There was a fielder coming from cover to collect the ball. Poor from Rabada. Markram rubs salt on the wound with a boundary to long-off. 9 from the over.
SRH 97/3 in 13 overs: Livingstone replaces Chahar. After a few quite overs, Pooran goes big against Livingstone, depositing a six over deep mid-wicket. 9 from the over.
SRH 88/3 in 12 overs: Arshdeep Singh back into the attack. Excellent from Arshdeep, only eight from the over. More importantly, no boundaries.
SRH 80/3 in 11 overs: GONE! Chahar is keeping PBKS in the hunt. He gets Abhishek now for 31. Nicholas Pooran joins Markram. He is off the mark with a fine sweep for two. 6 runs and a wicket.
SRH 74/2 in 10 overs: Livingstone comes into the attack. Abhishek slams a full toss over long-on for six. 10 from Livingstone’s first. SRH cruising at the moment.
SRH 64/2 in 9 overs: Chahar returns after the breaks and strikes! Tripathi has holed out. Big wicket. Aiden Markram comes to the middle. 3 runs and a wicket off the over. Excellent from Chahar. SRH need 88 from 66 balls.
SRH 61/1 in 8 overs: Tripathi greets Odean Smith with a six first ball! Tripathi is nearly run out off the fourth ball, trying to steal a single. But Dhawan’s throw at the non-striker’s end was wayward and Tripathi survived. Single to finish. 8 off that over.
SRH 53/1 in 7 overs: Chahar comes into the attack. Tripathi collects a four first ball, thanks to sloppy work by Rabada in the field. He follows it up with a couple. Tripathi pinches a single off the third ball. Chahar now concedes a wide, what’s worse? The ball races away to the fine leg fence. 1 to end the over. 14 from it. Sunrisers Hyderabad need 99 runs in 78 balls
SRH 39/1 in 6 overs: Arshdeep Singh to bowl the final over of the PowerPlay. Abhishek ends the over with a boundary. 2 singles and a four off it.
SRH 33/1 in 5 overs: Arora gets another one in the PowerPlay. Tripathi steps out and pummels the fourth ball square of the wicket for four. He follows it up with a couple. He ends the over with yet another four. 11 off it.
SRH 22/1 in 4 overs: GONE! Soft dismissal. Rabada gets Williamson caught. Rahul Tripathi is in next. He is off the mark with a couple before lifting the next ball over the leaping mid-off fielder for four. A couple to finish. 8 runs and a wicket.
SRH 14/0 in 3 overs: Arora continues. A boundary to Abhishek Sharma off the last ball. 6 runs from it.
SRH 8/0 in 2 overs: Rabada to share the new ball. Williamson on strike. Tidy start from Rabada. Just 2 from the over.
SRH 6/0 in 1 over: Vaibhav Arora has the new ball. Abhishek Sharma and Williamson start the chase. Arora starts with a leg-side ball that’s easily pulled away by Ahishek for four. Could’ve been a sharp return catch off the last delivery but the ball falls just short of Arora and Abhishek survives.
– START OF CHASE –
Umran Malik: “Was trying to bowl wicket to wicket. The heat didn’t affect me, he says. It’s 46 degrees celcius or 47 degrees in Jammu; I like bowling in the heat.”
Extraordinary performance from Umran. The other bowlers were disciplined too. Livingstone was the only shining light for the Kings. Excellent striking from him but none of the others stuck around for long enough. Back in a bit for the run chase.
PBKS 151 all out: Last over, to be bowled by Umran Malik. Short, into the body of Smith, who swings for a pull but misses. No run. Length delivery outside the off-stump, Smith heaves to try to obtain a huge six, but instead gets an edge (or the bat turns in his hand as he plays that stroke). The ball balloons up. Caught by Umran.
BOWLED! Full, on off-stump. Rahul Chahar, after playing out a dot ball, clears his front leg for a huge hit. But he is bowled – the off-stump cartwheels. BOWLED! He’s on a hat-trick! On a good length, on off-stump, Vaibhav Arora swings and misses. Hits the off-stump.
Last ball: Arshdeep backs away for a big hit. Length ball, on off-stump, smashed to the fielder at mid-off. The batters try to take a single, but there’s a run out. Four wickets have fallen in this over. And there’s no run.

And now a wide down the leg side, a single picked up too. Shahrukh cuts and picks up a single. Livingstone drives to long-off for a single.
Oh and Shahrukh is nearly out! It’s a slower delivery and Shahrukh doesn’t pick it. It’s a short ball and he tries to upper cut. Gets bat to ball but the ball balloons up and lands in the silly point region. No harm done. Full, on off-stump, Shahrukh tries to drive but gets an inside edge. Wide again – outside the off-stump; Shahrukh can’t reach out to it. Shahrukh slashes hard and picks up a single through sweeper cover.

PBKS 48/2 in 6 overs: Short of a length, on off-stump, from Jansen. Bairstow defends and picks up a single. Oh and an undorthodox stroke straightaway from Livingstone! He plays the scoop shot for four runs – the ball goes past the wicketkeeper. Tries again, misses. And then he plays a nice cut shot through cover for four runs!
Livingstone plays the scoop shot again – and this is played even better! Six through fine leg! Jansen drifts down the leg side, Livingstone leaves it alone, but it’s not a wide.
PBKS 33/2 in 5 overs: T. Natarajan in the attack, replaces Bhuvneshwar. Prabhsimran drives uppishly to mid-off for no run. Tries a lofted drive next up, off a half-volley, but doesn’t time the ball well – spoons it towards deep cover for two runs. Another half-volley, this time it’s driven down the ground for four runs! That was hit hard. And another! This time it’s a length ball on leg-stump and it’s hit through the line to midwicket for four! A shout for lbw as the batter tries another belligerent stroke – a flick-loft to square leg – but misses the ball.
Oh and Williamson takes a long time to go for the review – he takes the review in the nick of time. Oh and he’s out caught behind! There’s an inside edge to that and it’s caught by the keeper. So Prabhsimran is out.
Liam Livingstone is the new batter. He defends the last delivery of the over from his crease.
Prabhsimran c Pooran b Natarajan 14 (11b, 2×4)
PBKS 23/1 in 4 overs: Bairstow defends and calls a loud ‘no’. On the third delivery, he plays a pull shot to midwicket and picks up two runs. Shorter and perhaps faster from Jansen – Bairstow attempts the pull, gets a top edge and the ball goes over the head of the wicketkeeper for four runs! And another four! Bairstow cuts and picks up a boundary through third man. Tries a cut again but can’t put bat to ball.
PBKS 13/1 in 3 overs: Yorker length delivery from Bhuvneshwar, outside the off-stump, dug out for no run by Dhawan. Dhawan charges down the pitch and lofts the length delivery over the head of the fielder at mid-off – just about – and picks up two runs. He didn’t time that well. Slower ball, Dhawan cuts for no run – there’s no timing on that. And out! Charges down again, doesn’t get the distance, he is caught by the fielder at mid-on!
Jonny Bairstow is the new batter. Defends a short of a length delivery on the off-side and is nearly run out at the non-strikers’ end! His partner calls him for a run and Bairstow hesitates after taking off and then runs hard and scrambles through to the crease at the non-strikers’ end. That was close.
Shikhar Dhawan c Jansen b Bhuvneshwar 8 (11b, 1×4)
PBKS 8/0 in 2 overs: Marco Jansen to bowl the second over. Starts off with a short of a length delivery to Prabhsimran, who defends from the crease. Full on middle and leg-stump, flicked to square leg for a single. Oh and an attempted heave from Prabhsimran – he charges down the track for a mighty pull and misses. Shorter, an attempted hook shot, the ball passes the bat and goes through to the keeper.
PBKS 6/0 in 1 over: Bhuvneshwar starts with a couple of full deliveries – not a driving length – outside the off-stump to Dhawan. Dhawan charges down the pitch on the third delivery and flicks the ball, lofting it to deep midwicket for four runs! Dhawan attempts a flick again to a length delivery on leg-stump but doesn’t put bat to ball. The ball instead hits his groin and he’s down. Medical attention given to him.
A bit of a delay and Dhawan takes his time to get ready after being hit. Still grimacing with pain.
Play resumes. Short of a length, outside off, Dhawan taps it to point and picks up a single. A wide slip in place for Bhuvneshwar. Ful, on off-stump, to Prabhsimran, who pushes the ball to mid-on and picks up a single.
Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson at the toss. – BCCI/IPL
1527 IST: SRH in a huddle before the players walk out to take their positions in the field. Prabhsimran Singh and Shikhar Dhawan walk out to open the batting for the Kings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar to open the bowing for Sunrisers. All set for action!
1515 IST: A look at recent results: Sunrisers lost the first two games and won the next three, including the last one against Kolkata Knight Riders (by seven wickets); the Kings have won three out of five, including the first match and the last one, against Mumbai Indians on April 13 (by 12 runs).
This is the Kings’ second game at the DY Patil Stadium – it defeated RCB here on March 27. SRH has played three matches here, winning twice (against CSK and GT) and losing once (against LSG).
TOSS: SRH has won the toss and elected to field first.
Kane Williamson – We will bowl first. It’s something we’ve done recently, we need to just play according to our plans. The wicket will hold up for the entire game, just need to make those small improvements.
Shikhar Dhawan – Mayank got hit on his toe, he should be fine for the next game. So, there’s just one change for us – Prabhsimran is in. We are performing well without depending on individuals – need to continue playing well as a unit, the bowling can get better.
Sunrisers Hyderabad (Playing XI): Abhishek Sharma, Kane Williamson(c), Rahul Tripathi, Aiden Markram, Nicholas Pooran(w), Shashank Singh, Jagadeesha Suchith, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Marco Jansen, Umran Malik, T Natarajan
Punjab Kings (Playing XI): Shikhar Dhawan(c), Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh, Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma(w), Shahrukh Khan, Odean Smith, Kagiso Rabada, Rahul Chahar, Vaibhav Arora, Arshdeep Singh
1445 IST: We’re 15 minutes away from the toss. Will the main contest be between Punjab Kings batters and Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers, especially the seam attack? Kings’ top order has been among the runs, but Sunrisers’ bowlers have – thus far – allowed their opponents to score more than 180 just once (in the first match).
There will be little choose from on the basis of points table when Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings, both having won three of their five games so far in the Indian Premier League (IPL), face each other on Sunday. But on the basis of current form, Punjab Kings know its task will be cut out at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
From starting off on a disappointing note, the Sunrisers have emerged as a side to beat, having registered a hat-trick of wins. Having trumped the Knight Riders less than 48 hours earlier, Kane Williamson’s warriors will be hoping to convert its fabulous Friday into a super Sunday.
The Sunrisers pace quartet has showcased that it’s one of the toughest bowling units to conquer. It will be up against a line-up that can potentially prove to be a happy headache for Bhuvneshwar and Co. and a worthy contest to witness for the spectators.
Captain Mayank Agarwal, his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and Englishman Jonny Bairstow all like the ball coming on to the bat. If they can withstand the early onslaught, the Punjab Kings may hope to continue to remain in top four heading into a new week.
The match will also witness multiple battles within the battle. Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran will be hoping to continue teammate Rahul Tripathi’s streak of exceeding expectations against their former IPL franchise.
Ditto will be the case in the opposition camp, with Dhawan and Bairstow ready to fire on all cylinders versus their former franchise.
